Preliminary Clinical Evaluation by emergency department radiographers: Results from a pilot study benchmarking participation and diagnostic accuracy
Introduction: Jersey General Hospital is working towards implementation of a radiographer Preliminary Clinical Evaluation (PCE) system in line with new professional guidance from the Society of Radiographers. Radiographer PCE is an informed comment on imaging appearances, intended to assist the referrer in interim between image acquisition and a definitive report. The aim is to utilise the expertise and experience of radiographers in identifying normal and abnormal image findings on trauma radiographs to maximise diagnostic
accuracy. Pilot Project Objectives:• Assess radiographer PCE
participation.
• Compare PCE accuracy to a
performance standard. Methods: Study Design & Setting: Prospective diagnostic performance study comparing PCE accuracy to a fixed standard. Standard: 92% accuracy, derived from prior research. Sample size calculation: 354 PCEs were required to adequately power the study. Conclusion: In conclusion, while a recent pilot study reported a PCE participation rate of 66%, our study’s overall rate was 44%, with a notable increase to 47.9% in the latter half, suggesting improved integration of PCE into routine practice. Additionally, our
accuracy of 89.3% compares favourably against recommended benchmarks of 80% (minimal), 90% (optimal), and 95% (ideal) for interpreting musculoskeletal
radiographs, and results of recent literature.
An exploration of pre-registration adult student nurses’ experiences of learning whilst on placement
Aim and objective: This study was carried out to explore the experiences of third-year student nurses’ learning whilst on placement within the clinical setting. The findings will be used tomsupport the learning experiences of student nurses whilst undertaking the practical component of the pre-registration nursing programme within a small district hospital. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted within the philosophical underpinnings of hermeneutic phenomenology due to its concern with the human lived experience. A purposive sample was recruited and included in the results. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) 6-stage analysis. Findings: Key findings were identified as influencers to the student learning experience whilst in practice. These were categorised into the following themes: the learning environment, feeling respected and accepted, work versus learning and not belonging. Conclusion: Students’ experience of learning and their well-being can be significantly affected when they are left
feeling as though they do not belong or are not part of a Community of Practice. There is a need for a greater emphasis on assessors and supervisors in welcoming students into the placements Communities of Practice.
